Built like a tank

Best made quality laser money can buy. Very very solid sealed housing with an extremely accurate laser. Excellent excellent product. Don't buy cheap stuff. Save the extra money and you will have something that will last not to mention still be worth your investment instead of buying cheap stuff that eats up batteries and won't hold zero. Spend the money and have something you can depend on working when/if you need it. It's a very good laser and batteries last a long time in it. Once you get it you'll immediately see just how high quality it really is and you won't regret it plus if you decide to ever get a different model you will not have any trouble selling it because everyone knows the quality of Steiner. Thank you Steiner for making such quality products instead of making cheap junk to make more money. It is harder every day to find companies that make quality products anymore as most revert to making cheap products in order to make more money, it is nice to still have a quality company that continues to make extremely high quality products.

Leaves some to be desired

Purchased after a lot of research and am pretty happy with the unit itself. However, the first issue was that the protective cover for the visible and IR lasers broke before I even got to shoot it; I had only flipped it to the side about 10 times between observing the laser in different environments and finally doing a basic zero at 50 yards prior to shooting paper for zero over the course of 2 weeks. Customer service was happy to tell me the proper part number (which I already knew) so that I COULD PURCHASE IT. When I spend over $1k, I expect they would send me a 50-cent replacement or two for free, and not charge $10 each—big thumbs down on service. The illuminator itself really isn't that good so add a standalone one to your budget. Ultimately, however, it feels well-made and the visible green laser was noticeable even in daylight out to about 20 yards.

This product has exceeded expectations!

I bought this one week ago and just tested it out with my NVGs. As good as what we used in the military. I’m impressed.

AS close as you can get!

Preliminary inspection checked out and all appears to work correctly. Did an initial 10 meter zero and adjustments are good. Green on high is BRIGHT! So much so that it can be easily seen at 60yds. in the sunlight against a white background.

Expect to do live fire zero this week if I can get some time. First impression is exceptional quality and craftsmanship. I wish it was a little lighter but it's built like a tank for a reason so I'd rather have reliability and consistency over light weight.

This might be the best civilian laser product on the market. I own several different lasers and have experience with restricted IR units and unless you are a forward observer calling in air strikes, the DBAL-D2 is the one to get!

Great light for AR-15 -- not for the Steyr AUG

I had no problem installing the light onto the AR-15 with its full length picatinny rail. I thought the supplied velcro was a poor way of attaching the pressure switch, so purchased the Magpul M-LOK Insight PEQ Tape Switch Mounting Plate, Part #: MAG631-BLK to attach the pressure switch to the handguard and it fit perfectly.

The light appears to be of high quality so I purchased a second MK4 light for the Steyr AUG and found the rather large bolt used to attach the MK4 light onto the AUG's secondary picatinny rail was too large to mount the light. The bolt interferes with the primary picatinny rail, so my options are to either:
- Remove the primary picatinny rail to gain clearance in order to install the light onto the secondary rail and then re-install the primary rail once the light has been installed
- Locate a screw that does not have such a large bolt head
- Purchase the PuP light mount kit which attaches to the AUG's gas block

Have contacted Steiner Tech Support, they didn't have any suggestions re: mounting the pressure pad, (aside from adding more velcro) and they do not offer a screw with a smaller head so am disappointed with their support of the product.

Only one small issue with every DBAL I’ve used...

Durable, reliable, and with great features like a visible coaligned green laser for easy zeroing and an adjustable IR illuminator.

Only issue I have with every DBAL I’ve used is the port for the remote plug. PLEASE make this port a hair smaller in diameter so the Crane style remote plug (TAPS or SureFire) doesn’t rattle loose after firing a magazine. Even better would be designing the port with threads and the remote plugs like a coax cable that screws onto the back of the DBAL. I feel so “cheap” having this >$1000 device on my rifle with the plug taped up so it doesn’t come loose. I was not impressed with my ATPIAL-C, but at least I don’t lose my laser under night vision because the plug fell out.

The Real Deal

I Bought the OTAL-C IR designator for my AR-15 as a present to myself after coming home from my fourth deployment (along with a set of 3rd gen PVS-14s).
I’ve had the designator for over a year now.
The designator is sturdily built, and has maintained zero since being sighted in a year ago.
With third gen NVGs, the designator can be seen easily over 500m away.
The OTAL-C rivals the quality and construction of the AN/PEQ-4 I’ve used in the 82nd.
My only gripe is that the designator sits too high, with the quick-detach mount (about an inch and a half above the rail, which WILL partially obscure the field of view in a red-dot sight).
I actually came to this web-sight searching for a low-profile mount to change the QD out, and figured the product definitely deserves a review.

Brass-Tacks: I don’t buy junk twice. I bought a second OTAL-C a month after mounting the first one.

Use this for SWAT. Invaluable piece of gear.

Use is for real-world SWAT applications. Great piece of gear. Just works. The company standing behind it makes this a no-brainer.
